American astronomer Andrew Dogulass tried to photograph the highly debated canal features for Percival Lowell in a trip to Arizona, but quickly realized that these canals turned out to be an optical illusion created by dust and irregularities in the lenses. This also led to the discovery that the atmosphere was far too thin to support life or Earth-like climate.
