Xu Wenwu is expelled from Ta-Lo for attempting to usurp Yu Huang. He is forced to leave Kunlun and return to China. He leaves behind Jiang Li, who before he goes gives him one of the Eyes of the Dragon, sacred Xian gems. She says it will keep them connected.

Heartbroken, bitter, and angry, Xu uses his immortality and skills learned from the Xian to impress and inspire a new generation of rebels. The Ten Rings begins to grow in numbers, intent on curtailing the influence of both the Qing government and that of foreigners, particularly Christians.
