The summer before first grade my family moved into the David Douglas School District. My dad got clean, and overall life became more peaceful. My dad was more present, my parents stopped fighting, and everything felt good. My first-grade teacher was named Mrs. Patton. She was very kind and loving, I would describe her as grandmotherly. I met my best friend named Chandra. I was also very shy, and Chandra’s mom was an assistant at the school and she would always come and check on me. I felt very safe and protected with my teacher and Chandra’s mom around.
