15 nov 331 año aC - The Conspiracy of Philotas
Descripción:
- philotas was the son of parmenio
- commander of the elite companion cavalry
- by all accounts brilliant, arrogant, and tactless
one of alexander's soldiers invited his lover to join in on an attack against alexander
- the lover told philotus and eventually what happened was that philotus kinda stalled and didn’t take it seriously
- the original plotter committed suicide
- philotus was arrested on suspicion on being part of this plot
- he was tried, tortured into a confession and stoned to death
- sent back with an order to kill parmenio
whyyyy???
- maybe tactical, maybe his intention to move east towards the mountain would mean he woudlnt need a calvalry and he’s head of the cavalry
- his character made him a good target (had no patience for alexander)
- the real target was not so much philotas, but parmenio
- he removed two leaders that could possible lead resistance in the future
- this shows alexanders paranoia and fear of plots. there’s no evidence that philotas conspired anything
- should be called the conspiracy against philotas (badumtis)
- moving away from macedonian loyalties
by getting rid of these two men in a brutal way,
- he was moving into another stage of his development
