In 1390, the Kingdom of Kongo was founded by Lukeni Lua Nimi. The kingdom was made up of present day Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The capital was Mbanza Kongo, and the king was called the manikongo. Conquered territories were added to the expanding kingdom as royal patrimonies.
