The Book of Alexandria was written by numerous authors and representatives in a major planetwide academic collaboration to recall and solidify a complete written history of Earth in its last years. The medium of the book wasn't leather and paper, rather it was contained on a microchip and read on a Halo-Tablet which was a clear display that would become opaque when activated to allow for reading.

Multiple copies of the Book of Alexandria was loaded onto each colony ship but colony ship operators were instructed not to allow the colonists to view or have access to the books. The idea being, the colonists would eventually discover the books late in their development as to avoid contaimenating or corrupting the development of the colonists.
