After hosting their first summit in November 1975, the G6 (Group of 6) changed their name to the now iconic G7. This came at the request of U.S. President Gerald Ford, who wanted another strong North American member of the group. On their second summit, Canada, led by the renowned Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, joined the group. The G7 has stayed the same for the last 45 years.
