The 17th amendment is important because its ratification in 1913 made direct election of senators the law of the land. Government reform including efforts to give Americans more of a voice in electing their legislators and creating laws drew increased numbers of women into public life. It also focused renewed attention on the issue of woman suffrage, (which later helped support women’s suffragist groups like NAWSA) and influenced the Federal Reserve System with government reform efforts.
