24 ene 2013 año - Government Lifts Ban on Women Serving in Combat Positions
Descripción:
In 2013, the Secretary of Defense said, "[women] be allowed to drive tanks, fire mortars and lead infantry soldiers into combat." This will open over 20,000 jobs for women in the army and Marine Corps. In 1994, the Pentagon set a rule that said women could not hold jobs dealing with artillery, armor, infantry, and other combat roles. Several lawsuits had been filed to get rid of the ban, one of them from the American Civil Liberties Union was for four servicewomen. Maj. Mary Jennings Hegar is an Air National Guard helicopter pilot and got shot down over Afghanistan while returning fire. She could not pursue a higher position though because of the ban, her experience could not be counted as combat experience.
