The first animals were sent into space on a V2 rocket. These animals were fruit flies that flew into space on a V2 rocket in White Sands Missile Ranch, New Mexico. This experiment was done to test the effects of radiation exposure at high altitudes, and the fruit flies were recovered alive. The rocket flew up 66-68 miles (around 100 kilometers) for 3 minutes and 10 seconds, beating previous records. These fruit flies were chosen to be put into space because fruit flies were and still are incredibly common and actually have similar genetic traits to humans, being able to carry similar diseases. This proved that some form of life with similar make up to the human species could successfully survive in space. I would consider this mission a success as it gave valuable scientific information that furthered space exploration and the animals were recovered alive.
