The Compromise of 1850 stated that California would be a free state and that slave trade would be illegal in Washington D.C. It also stated that the rest of the land gained from the Mexican war would decide if they wanted slavery in their territory or not by voting it's called Popular Sovereignty, and that a fugitive slave law was passed (Affected the whole country).
