The Treaty of Paris of 1898 officially ended the Spanish American War. The treaty freed Cuba, which was the U.S.'s main point for the war, but the Spanish were also forced to relinquish the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico, all of which were very strategic naval bases, aiding the U.S. military to become the renowned power it is today.
