Upset by tensions between North and South and anti-slavery sentiments in the North, South Carolina officially left the United States in late 1860. Although there were some claims over infringement upon states rights and the presidential elections, the letter of secession sent by South Carolina addressed the fact that the reason for secession was almost entirely over preserving slavery. South Carolina was the first state to leave the Union, and many other Southern States followed in suit.
