17 ene 1920 año - Eighteenth Amendment
Descripción:
In the late 1800s, prohibition movements had appeared across the whole US. They were driven by religious groups who considered alcohol, specifically, drunkenness, a threat to the nation. Because prohibition became so popular among certain groups, Congress ratified the 18th Amendment in 1920. The 18th Amendment read that it prohibited the manufacture, transportation, and sale of intoxicating liquors. This Amendment was created for the purpose of eliminating crime, and other social problems, but contrary to its purpose, it had to opposite effect. It led to a rise in organized crime and the invention of speakeasies.
