From October 6th through October 9th, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed. B-29 bombers dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, killing 80,000 people. Many people who survived the initial explosion died of radiation. Then on October 9th, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing 40,000 people.
These devastating events are important parts of WWII, because they lead Japan to surrender. Soon after these bombings, Emperor Hirohito announced Japan's surrender of World War II.
