The battle of Antietam began when Union forces captured a detailed description of General E. Lee’s plans to divert all of his armies towards different areas. All of the confederate armies under General E. Lee has been diverted and he had to reunite them as the Union forces moved in. The forces battled for some time until the Union army under Mclennan eventually defeated the confederate army and they retreated back into Virginia. This battle was very important because it is the deadliest battle in the war and proved that the Union army was starting to mount tons of offensive heading into the next battle of Gettysburg.
