President Abraham Lincoln believed originally that the main goal of the Civil War to completely unite the Union again. But, as the war progressed on he realized that the war would only be won if slavery ended. As the Union invaded the Southern states many of the slaves living in the South began to flee and Lincoln realized that. So, he passed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1st 1863, which freed all slaves living in confederate states and allowed them to leave. This weakened the officiallity of the confederacy to France and England as well and gave the North a much bigger foothold in the Civil War.
