Descripción:
*Entered into force 1 December 2009
Treaty of Lisbon was signed to update/amend certain policies and regulations introduced through the Maastricht Treaty and Treaty of Rome
The main goals were to introduce a permanent president and update the voting system as well as a better way to propose policy changes and establish a more sophisticated foreign policy
European Council Presidency: Presidents would now rotate every 2½ years (30 months) and be elected through voting in the European Council.
The first president was Herman Van Rompuy (1 December 2009-31 May 2012)
The second Donald Tusk (1 December 2014-30 November 2019)
The current president is the ex-Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel (1 December 2019-31 May 2022)
Citizens' Iniative: Gave the public the opportunity to propose policy changes if their iniative had reached 1 million signatures. The Lisbon Treaty tried to incorporate a more democrativ way of voting not only inside the Institutions but also by giving the public their platform.
Foreign Policy: The Treaty of Lisbon introduced a high representative to deal with Foreign Affairs as a way of establishing stronger connections with countries outside the EU and a more efficient way of dealing with foreign policy
