The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by US Congress on May 30th, 1854. The act allowed residents in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves if slavery was allowed or not within their borders. The Kansas-Nebraska Act ended up repealing the Missouri Compromise of 1820.
