Fort Donelson in Kentucky was a vital fort for the Confederacy. When General Grant blockaded and squeezed the Fort, forcing a Confederate surrender, it was disastrous for the South. Because of his harshness, Grant earned the nickname “Unconditional Surrender". After this point in the war, death counts began to climb, starting with the Battle of Shiloh.
