NATO was the a means of reassuring the Western European states in the face of a possible Soviet military aggression.
Gave USA regional defence.
Article 1: 'to settle any international disputes...by peaceful means'
Article 5: 'The Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all.'
