By a vote of 5,854 to 3,810, the American Psychiatric Association removes homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in the DSM-II Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Homosexuality spent 21 years listed as a sociopathic personality disturbance in the APA's manual. During this time some therapists employed aversion therapy to "cure" homosexuality. This typically involved showing patients pictures of members of the same sex naked while giving them electric shocks or drugs to make them vomit. This was a step forward for civil rights for homosexuals, as they would no longer be treated as mentally ill for their sexual preference.
