To the east of Alaska, bordered an enormous area of land that was under British control. Various colonies had been unified over the years so that by the 1860s, the majority of the land was known as the Province of Canada. The population was that of around two-and-a-half million, made up English settlers, French settlers, and indigenous Canadians.

Eventually, a number of factors prompted Britain's North American colonies to separate themselves from the British government. The Province of Canada united with Nova Scotia and New Brunswick in July 1867 and became an independent confederation under the name Canada.

Over the next century, the Canadian mainland, as well as it's islands, would be divided up into ten provinces and three territories totalling 3.8 million sq miles, making it the second largest country in the world.
