- In October of 1916, the Canadian Corps relieved the British IV Corps from the western slopes of Vimy Ridge
- The previous two years had been spent with both the French and English attempting to reclaim the ridge from the Germans, with little success
- The Canadians gathered information on the ridge, and the various possible strategy's that they could perform
- From this information they formed a comprehensive tactical plan
- On the 9th of April, 1917, the Canadians mounted their attack on the ridge.
- Within three days the Germans had retreated from the ridge and the Canadians had proven themselves as just as capable, if not more capable, as their allies
- This led to a sense of pride and national identity that simply weas non existent previousley
