Throughout history of the 20th century the gay community was frowned upon and even criminalized. In the 1970s during the sexual revolution the gay community started to protest for their rights. By the late 80s and 90s gay couples could openly date, still receiving but no longer being arrested, though they still lacked the ability to marry. In 2005 that was changed for Canadians. Canada was the 3rd country to legalise gay marriage. Now the pride flag in Canada is flown at every city hall, school, and parliment building as symbol that our country is a safe place.
