Japanese planes bombard a naval base in Hawaii, destroying 19 ships and 150 planes. The attack also took 2,400 lives. America recoiled from the devastation, and it took only one day for the US government to declare war on Japan. The Tripartite Act of 1940 turned our declaration of war into the commencement of America’s participation in World War II.

Japan, in the attempt to cripple the United States’ navy, initiated the war in the Pacific. Luckily for the US, most of our aircraft carriers were spared, facilitating the swift jump into World War II. This attack was the event that convinced US civilians that war was inevitable, and now the hunger for revenge became unanimous.
