Jamestown was the first permanent English settlement in the North America. It was founded on May 14, 1607 by the Virginia Colony. Jamestown suffered from disease and famine in its first couple years of existence as the settlers tried to figure out how to work the land and climate and get along with the Indian tribe present on the land. Jamestown’s cash crop was tobacco, which boosted their economy and allowed for profit.
