Confederate General Robert Lee surrendered in the battle at Appomattox to Union General Grant. Lee had tried to outrun Grant to Virginia but this time the Union blocked the Confederates and forced them to retreat at Appomattox Court House. This surrender ended the Civil War and gave the Union the victory of the US Civil War.
