One of the first cities to be built after the Flood.

Babel’s God-defying program centered around construction of a religious tower “with its top in the heavens.” It was not built for the worship and praise of Jehovah, but was dedicated to false man-made religion, with a motive of making a “celebrated name” for the builders.

Jehovah God, however, combated this rebellion. He destroyed their unity by confusing the language they used. In fact, God at that moment created entirely new languages, each with their own vocabularies and syntaxes. With the workers not being able to collaborate together, the project was abandoned.

We do not know exactly how many languages were created at Babel, but the ancient Biblical texts do refer to 70 different families, or nations, that started to spread across the Earth according to their "tongues". If this meant that each family spoke a different language, then it seems that 70 original parent lan-guages existed after the events of Babel, and these languages over the centuries slowly branched off and descended into the roughly 6,500 different languages spoken today.
