Descripción:

The Amritsar Massacre, a major turning point for the relationship between the Indians and British, happened in the spring of 1919. Around 10,000 Hindus and Muslims gathered in Amritsar, where citizens delivered political speeches that spread Gandhi’s non-violence ideas. Such action alarmed the British, resulting in the commander to fire on the crowd for then minutes, killing 400 Indians with 1,200 injured. The massacre stirred nationalism all over India and millions of Indians became nationalists overnight as the event triggered fierce disapproval in India, serving as a catalyst that made the Indians demand independence. Before the massacre, Gandhi only supported partial autonomy for India. However, after seeing hundreds of Indians killed, he decided full independence is the only condition India should accept. With that in mind, Gandhi began to organize his first mass nonviolence protest, resulting him in becoming the leader of India’s independent movement. A year later, Gandhi successfully urged the Indian National Congress to endorse civil disobedience, a policy of using non-violence to gain independence and refusing any unjust law from the British government. In 1930 Gandhi led the Salt March, which was the best example of civil disobedience. In time, the policy was proved to be a success.
