maire goes to find james (and wiliam, he's there, too, coaching and throwing jokes) training his new watch in swordfighting n stuff
it's a sorry bunch, but jos is there and even though he's crude, he's also very obviously a natural, and he just needs a bunch of training
but maire isn't there to see jos, and while they're doing drills, james comes over and she tells him she wants to see kano and he's going to get her in there
james agrees, but says it'll have to be after 4 bc then both their schedules are clear or smth
just before maire leaves, she looks over to see jos watching her, but she just smiles and leaves without a word
she goes to see neslin and ask how she's doing
she's better, but all this isolation is making her cranky
maire asks her about crucifixion and whether or not that's smth they do on the isles, and neslin tells her a little smth about it, how it's meant to be torture and not death, people are cut down before they die and healed back to health or w/e and sometimes they're executed in a more proper way afterwards, sometimes they're made to just have those scars for the rest of their lives
she says that whoever this saint it, it's not someone who understood what crucifixion is actually about, so it's probably someone local
definitely not someone from the isles
maire asks if she'd like to do smth other than being stuck in her room all day, neslin is all 'yes, absolutely, whatever u wanna do, i'm in'
so she takes her to old bridge to see cyd bc of smth with shade
the viiza are still camped out on old bridge bc they can't leave the city gates, and where else are they gonna go
so they're in the like, main tent or w/e, and cyd and cade are both there, as well as some of the elders and leaders and stuff
and maire is all 'ur nomads, u've travelled the world, do u know anything about shade?'
cyd calls her out on it and says she's only asking them that bc they're viiza and she thinks they're dealing
maire tries to defend herself, but it's neslin who cuts in and says that they'd never believe that, and that as a child, she and her mother faces similar accusations bc they were openly practising witchcraft and bc of where they were from and all (medi is considered one of those 'progressive no-good countries that have no respect for tradition' n stuff)
she also says that she has no right to compare her experiences with theirs, but that they truly mean no harm and they're only trying to figure this out
the elders or w/e are like 'we've seen what shade can do, in its basic form it's mostly harmless if a bit rotten, but in the ruins of the sauvakin empire, alchemists have been experimenting and enhancing it and changing its true form into smth twisted that'll leave the body not only rotten, but downright dead if taken too much or too often'
one of the others is like 'have u ever heard of shadows?' and tells them about the difference between shadows and shades and stuff, and how shade quite literally turns u into a shade (which i did not plan for, happy little accident) with no conscience and no soul and superhuman strength
now, this is very much what maire has been looking for, and it's not exactly a good indication since she's pretty sure kano's been messing in it
they thank them and leave, and neslin takes a carriage back to the castle while maire goes to the prison
there, she meets james who's brought wiliam along
she's not happy about this, but james swears up and down that wiliam can be trusted
(maybe we'll have a james pov of this day, too, idk)
wiliam distracts the guards while james sneaks her down to see kano, then keeps watch
maire gets kano's attention
he's not looking good, he's very beat up
he's also upset that she thinks he's a murderer and asks if she'd think the same of him if he wasn't a poor kid off the streets
maire doesn't answer, instead she goes on the defensive and is all 'look at the evidence, what about the drugs, did u even think that through? don't u know they're bad for u? it'll literally turn u into a shade'
kano scoffs at her and asks her if she knows what shade will do to u
she says that she does
so he asks her if she thinks it did that to her, if she thinks he got too greedy and too high and killed those people bc he couldn't control himself
maire says that she doesn't know what she's supposed to think, but she can't believe he'd do that, at least not in a sane state of mind
they start fighting and he hisses at her that he won't be imprisoned for something he didn't do
this hits home for her, and she doesn't say anything
kano scoffs at her again and tells her to leave
she does so, even more confused and broken up about it

that night, kano has an interlude where someone in a hood comes and offers him some shade
he's miserable, so he takes it and gets all high and then goes all shade feral and rips the bars of the prison right off
he escapes
