Although there were a few Sunday Schools already in use in England, the idea wasn't widely accepted yet. This prompted Robert Raikes to promote them, and by the 1830s 1.250.000 children were in Sunday Schools. These were seen as the precursors to state schooling, because that wasn't a thing yet.
