1 ene 1700 año aC - The first record about neuroscience

Descripción:

The term neuroscience came from the words neuro, meaning nerve, and science. It is a scientific study for the nervous system. The first study of the brain was in ancient Egypt. Manuscripts from 1700 BC had some records about symptoms of brain damage. But in ancient times, people believed that the heart was a source of intelligence and the brain existed to cool down the heat of the blood and heart. This idea got challenged later in Greek by the physician Hippocrates around 300 BC. He believed the brain is the source of intelligence and involved in sensation because important organs such as the eyes, mouth, nose are near the brain. But this idea was not generally accepted until one of Hippocrates’ followers discovered the relationship between mental faculties and sustained damage to the brain. Also, they were not very informed in anatomical view because they did not dissect human bodies since they were considered sacred. Soon, more anatomical facts about human brains were discovered in Egypt around 300-200 BC.

Since then, studies in human brains weren’t very active until the middle ages and renaissance. Some people in the renaissance made several improvements in neuroscience. In the 19th century, scientists advanced neuroscience studies, such as electrical effects on muscles and neurons. Invention on microscopes made the studies more sophisticated so that the structures of individual neurons could be studied and visualized. Later in the 20th century, the studies on neuroscience became even more advanced.
