A surprise attack from the Vietcong. The United States was completely taken aback and lost many troops. They eventually recovered and got back to essentially where they started, but again had lost many troops. All of this was taken horribly by the United States Civilians, as they saw the absolute carnage and no obvious purpose or chances to winning.
