12 oct 1491 año - The Arrival of Christopher Columbus in The Bahamas

Descripción:

The arrival of Christopher Columbus in what is today The Bahamas set the stage for settler-colonialism of the United States, leading to tensions and conflicts between settlers and Indigenous peoples that were still prevalent throughout the 1800s. This event was also placed in almost every educational history textbook ever written, depicting a false narrative of how history occurred. Columbus was named an American hero, discovering unused land that a future powerhouse nation could one day inhabit when in reality, he was not a friend to indigenous groups and played a large role in the mass rape and killing of natives of the Americas. Naming Columbus the “first” to set foot in the Americas also creates the idea that nobody had lived there prior.

This false narrative matters because education is one of the largest influences of the younger generation. When people are only given one side to the story, the other side is being erased from history, which hints as to which parts of history are considered more important to the narrators of these stories.
