The United states and 11 other nations formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in fear of the spread of communism, deterring Soviet expansionism, forbidding the revival of nationalist militarism in Europe through American presence, and encouraging European political integration. The Communist supporting nations created a counter called the Warsaw Pact, in 1955.

The NATO helped the nations stay organized come together as one to share and provide resources for each other. This pact created the foundations for a military standoff that was used in the cold war as well.
