New Māori artforms were being created with contemporary modes of expression in writing, theatre and visual arts spurring a pivitol hui at Te Kaha. Ngā Puna Waihanga was formed to bring together Māori artists and writers concerned with the promotion and fostering of Māori Arts.
There were over 200 participants and leaders in various art forms, such as raranga, theatre, creative writing, and visual arts. Artists who were present included Diggeress Te Kanawa, Witi Ihimaera, Hirini Melbourne, Hone Tūwhare, Rangimārie Hetet, Charles Bennett, Buck Nin, Ralph Hotere, Selwyn Muru, Rei Hamon, and Kura Te Waru Rewiri.
This movement continued to grow with iwi moving as regional groups across the country to hui and support the momentum of cultural revitalisation through the arts.
