1 ene 1907 año - 1907 Tōhunga Suppression Act

Descripción:

Typically known to be created to assimilate Māori; the Act’s impact on Tōhunga had dire consequences that made practises normally reserved for Tōhunga and sacred learning spaces forbidden by law.

Whilst aimed at the practitioners such as Māori healers it also stiffled any progress of expression of Māori culture. Practises like Tā Moko were one of these artforms to be impacted as this knowledge was usually reserved for holders of specialist knowledge.

This art form was threatened up until the 1990’s where groups like Te Uhi a Mataora was formed to bring Tā Moko back from near extinction.
