During the cold war, Soviet Union gave support to the communist Afghan government. Insurgents called the mujahideen fought back against the government. US backed the insurgents, supplied them with weapons. These insurgents eventually became Al-Quada. US invaded after 9/11 attacks carried out by Al-Quada leader Osama bin Laden. He was eventually killed, though involvement in the area continues.
