The US encouraged Saudi Arabia to increase oil production, which caused oil prices to collapse. Oil was Russia's main source of income. Economic conditions for the collapse of the Soviet Union were created under Reagan. The US bankrupted the Soviet Union so that they didn't have control over the small countries in the same way they did before. Officially ends in 1989 with fall of Berlin Wall. Soviet Union ends in 1991 with Gorbachav, a new progressive leader: allowed free speech, removed Soviet Troops from Eastern Europe and they could now hold their own elections.

East Germans were tired of the difficult economic situation and lack of freedoms. Stormed the walls and revolted. Free movement between East and West Berlin, which continues throughout the whole country. Other Eastern countries also revolted when they saw the success of Germany.
