Watergate scandal began in 1972 where 5 men broke into the headquarters of Democratic Party in the Watergate Hotel. Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward from Washington Post connected burglars and Nixon reelection committee, and public knowledge of Nixon secretly recording tapes in Oval Office led investigators to want the tapes to be turned over. United States v Nixon case ordered for him to turn over the tapes and House Judiciary Committee voted for impeachment in 1974. He resigned, and this caused public distrust in the government with decreased voting rates.
