Berlin divided into capitalist and communist zones. June 1948 US/UK/Fr introduce new currency, Soviets cut of access to West Berlin. Blockade lifted May 12, 1949. May 23, Western/Eastern Berlin claimed by US/USSR respectively. Western half was FRG (Federal Republic of Germany) and Soviet zone was GDR (German Democratic Republic). Wall upheld between Aug 1961 and Nov 1989.
