6 agos 1945 año - Atomic Bomb
Descripción:
US thought that Japan would never surrender. Most recent scholarship found that there were actually many Japanese moderates who would have been willing to negotiate, but Truman (Pres after FDR dies in 45) wanted an unconditional surrender no matter what. US developed the bomb during the war with the Manhattan Project in deserts in the West. US civilians had no knowledge of the project. Japanese had a vague inkling that the US had a bomb, but didn't have any details. US gave Japan no warning. Said they would increase firebombing if no surrender, but didn't mention atomic weapons. US drops first bomb on Hiroshima on Aug 6 1945. Say if Japan doesn't surrender they'll drop another one. They don't, so US drops another on Nagasaki 3 days later. Finally, surrender. Planned for up to 7 if Japan didn't back down. Casualties were massive. Killed more than 100,000 on first impact and even more from poisoning. Marks end of war.
