Japan successfully takes over Philippines because US troops were undersupplied. Only 150,000 on the allied side, including many Filipinos. 75,000 were captured and forced to march North to a prison camp in what's now called the Bataan Death March. 10,000 died. At first, US gov didn't release details of this, but did once they realized it would be useful propaganda against the Japanese. Failure in Philippines and high cost of island hopping played into decision to drop the bomb.
