Emperor Diocletian determined that the Roman Empire was too large for him to rule all on his own. So he came up with the idea to split Rome into two areas. These areas were the Eastern Roman Empire and the Western Roman Empire. This turned out to be a wise decision because things could have gotten a lot worse had they not split. Even though the West fell apart shortly after.
