You could argue that the war actually started in 1931 in Manchuria. Japan got control of the area after Ruso-Japanese War, but Chinese nationalist leader Chiang Kai Shek says the land belongs to China, leading Japan to invade. Major violence with destruction of Nanjing and Shanghai by Japan. Japanese launch full assault on Manchuria 1937 because they need the land to fuel industrialization and support growing population. Japan at this point is very fascist and nationalist, leading them to form an alliance with Nazis.
