1 jul 1935 año - Second New Deal

Descripción:

First New Deal works pretty well, so before reelection (which he wins easily), he rolls out a Second New Deal, including a few new agencies

WPA -Works Progress Administration- replaces FERA. Also conducts oral history projects and records the folk songs and stories of former slaves. Provided 9 million jobs and created more stimulus spending
Wagner Act- Strengthens labor unions and protects them from businesses. Eventually replaced by
Fair Labor Standards Act- sets minimum wage, outlaws child labor, regulates length of work day
Social Security Act- creates pension system that pays out to retired people over 65. Also created unemployment insurance and helps orphans and the disabled.

Supreme Court ends up nullifying National Recovery Act, among other things, arguing that the Pres was becoming too powerful. The Supreme Court was composed of mostly Rep judges previous admins. Others hated FDR because they thought he was becoming too socialist/communist. Scared because of Russian Rev and rise of Stalin. Most of his critics are rich. Others argue that his government spending was raising the national debt too high.

Most New Deal agencies were discriminatory. Hired white people before black people, and distributed goods disproportionately to white communities. Many Black Americans could not gain access to FDR's relief plans either through discrimination built into the agencies themselves, or the racist actions of government employees on the ground. Also, Mexican Repatriation Act deported upwards of 1.8 million latinx people back to Mexico in a misguided effort to reduce the strain on the economy. Over 60% of the deportees were citizens.
