He started the Universal Negro Improvement Association. He proposes that black people should move to other countries and found their own black-run communities. He says trying to fix America will never work, so they should leave. He also argues that black people should try to start self-sufficient communities and keep money within said communities. Calls for independence from colonialism in all African countries. Calls on Woodrow Wilson's 14 points. Starts a shipping line for this purpose. He gets charged with mail fraud. Was a thinly veiled attempt to silence the movement. Deported back to his native Jamaica. His ideas go on to inspire other black activists in the future, especially those about economic self-sufficiency.
