8 feb 1915 año - Second KKK
Descripción:
The progressive era and the events of WW1 spawned a new wave of extremism, not only against black people but also feminists (and other radicals), immigrants, Catholics, Jews, atheists, bootleggers etc. The racist, nationalism film Birth of a Nation (1915) was also to blame for the KKKs increased activity. Taking advantage of this popularity, Colonel William Joseph Simmons organized the "second" Ku Klux Klan in Georgia (1915). Had almost 5 mil members, even in Northern states. Created a women's division. Protecting prohibition through any means necessary became one of their main goals. Dominated politics in rural areas such that most elected candidates were endorsed by the klan. Violent attacks against Black americans and other groups increased such that OK had to be put under martial law in 1923. Many instances of violence went unprosecuted as the klan had infiltrated many local governments.
