A historical theory through which to view the wars of 1898. Argues that these wars brought the nation together again after the Civil War by allowing former confederates to fight overseas. Fighting against people of color in other nations became the confederates new way to subjugate other races. Played into the massive violence in the Philippines and elsewhere. During this time period, the confederate flag was unbanned, and many soldiers flew it alongside the union flag. Became even more acceptable during WW1
